We followed the railroad tracks back wandering side to side wherever the footing seemed easier. We could see the stream down below and the cars traveling on the road on the opposite side. We came to a switching yard and I took off my shoes so that Dad could tape my foot where the shoes rubbed side to side.
On one side of the tracks, the north side, the ground was still frozen and covered with snow. We left the tracks near Bunker Hill and cut down through. (Oh yes, we timed ourselves to the milestone markers. We made a mile in 16 min in the dark). We went down Ash Street to Wheeler to Myrtle to Quincy. Dad left me two blocks behind. He said he wanted to get home in tome to see 7:00 o’clock tv (Lassie). He did.
